Since the old Honkan building, designed by Josiah Conder, was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, the present Honkan, designed by Jin Watanabe, was built in 1938. The Honkan building is a representative building of "Teikan Yoshiki," or Imperial Crown Style, which is built with concrete and has a tiled roof. In Honkan, Japanese art works and craftworks are exhibited, and visitors can also see historical materials.
