You can find the remnants of changes of the times in Ueno Park. The grave of the Shogitai, which fought against the government army when the return of political power to the Emperor, lies quietly next to the bronze statue of Takamori Saigo who was a strategy staff of the government army (the statue was created by Koun Takamura in 1898, and Saigo's pet dog "Tsun" was created by Sadayuki Goto).

Clansmen and warriors, who gathered to ask for the commutation of the death sentence of Yoshinobu staying in the Kan-eiji Temple, called themselves the "Shogitai," placed their base in the Ueno area and fought against the government army. In this Battle of Ueno, the Shogitai was ruined. Then, there was the return of political power to the Emperor and the restoration of the imperial rule. The 700-year history of the shogunate since the Kamakura Shogunate came to the end.
